Ask any ketone brand how much you should take and watch them talk for a paragraph without saying a number.
Here are the numbers. They come from humans, not mice, and one of the two studies was paid for by a ketone company, which we will point out when we get there.
Short answer: in healthy adults, a single 7 gram dose of BHB salt measurably raised circulating ketones within 30 minutes. In an eight week trial, 10 grams a day of BHB mineral salts alongside a calorie deficit tracked with more weight lost than placebo, though the between-group statistics did not reach significance. Separately, pooled cognition data shows the effect gets bigger with dose. Godspeed carries 6 or more grams per stick.
How fast it moves
A 2025 pilot study gave healthy young adults 7 grams of sodium beta-hydroxybutyrate in 16 ounces of water, against a flavor and calorie matched maltodextrin placebo, with a week between visits.
Thirty minutes later they drew blood. Plasma acetoacetate, the ketone that BHB converts into, had gone from 1.61 to 2.18 millimolar. The placebo group went from 1.59 to 1.66, which is nothing.
The gain with the ketone salt was 0.57 millimolar against 0.07 on placebo, p equals 0.009, effect size 0.86, which is large. Urinary ketones went from undetectable to measurable.
So the thirty minute thing is not marketing. It is a measured number in people.
Now the limits, because this was a pilot. Thirteen participants after exclusions. One single time point, so nobody knows the shape of the curve after that. No tracer was used, which means the link from the BHB you drank to the acetoacetate they measured is correlational, not proven. The participants were untrained and not keto adapted. One person showed no rise and one went down.
How much, over eight weeks
The second study is bigger and messier.
Fifty one adults, BMI 27 to 35, randomized double blind against placebo for eight weeks. The ketone group took 5 grams of racemic BHB mineral salts twice a day, 10 grams total, in water. Everyone ate roughly 500 calories below their needs.
The ketone group lost about 3.1 kilos. Placebo lost about 1.5. Within the ketone group, body fat percentage improved and the lean to fat ratio moved from 1.66 to 1.74.
Here is what the headline version of that paragraph leaves out, and you should know it before you repeat the 3.1 number to anyone.
The between-group comparisons did not reach statistical significance. The fat mass interaction came out at p equals 0.22. The improvements that did reach significance were within-group, which is a weaker claim than beating placebo outright.
Blood ketones were never measured, so nobody can confirm the participants actually got into ketosis or even took the product consistently.
And the study was funded by Ketone Labs, which makes the goBHB ingredient. The senior author discloses advisory roles with a company selling ketone products.
None of that makes it worthless. It is a real randomized controlled trial in real people at a real dose. It does mean the fair summary is promising and underpowered, not proven.
The thread running through both
Separately from either of those, the 2026 cognition meta-analysis we wrote about found a positive relationship between daily ketone dose and the size of the cognitive effect. More went with more.
Put the three together and you get the only dosing guidance the evidence actually supports. A meaningful single dose is in the range of 7 grams. A daily protocol tested over two months used 10. And across a separate body of work, bigger doses did more than smaller ones.
What you will not find anywhere in that literature is support for a product with half a gram of BHB and a picture of a mountain on the label.
What that means for what is in your hand
Godspeed is 6 or more grams of goBHB per stick, bound to 1,230 milligrams of electrolytes.
So one stick sits just under the 7 grams used in the single dose study, and below the 10 grams a day the eight week trial ran. That is the honest comparison and we would rather you hear it from us.
Start with one stick. That is the label and it is where to start. If you are curious about the higher end, that is a conversation for you and your doctor, not a line in a blog post, particularly because every stick also carries 600 milligrams of sodium.
FAQ
How much BHB should I take?
Human studies have used a single 7 gram dose of BHB salt to raise circulating ketones within 30 minutes, and 10 grams a day split into two doses over eight weeks in a weight loss trial. Pooled cognition data separately shows larger daily doses tracking with larger effects. No study has established an optimal dose, and product labels should be followed.
How fast do exogenous ketones work?
Fast. In a 2025 human pilot study, 7 grams of sodium BHB raised plasma acetoacetate from 1.61 to 2.18 millimolar at the 30 minute mark, while placebo did not move. Only that one time point was measured, so the duration of the rise was not characterized.
Do BHB salts actually raise blood ketones?
Yes. The 2025 pilot measured a significant rise in plasma acetoacetate and detectable urinary ketones after a single 7 gram dose of sodium BHB, against a matched placebo that showed no change. The sample was small at thirteen people and no isotope tracer was used, so the pathway is inferred rather than proven.
Does taking BHB help you lose weight?
The best available human trial gave 10 grams a day of BHB mineral salts to adults in a 500 calorie deficit for eight weeks. That group lost more weight than placebo, but the between-group statistics did not reach significance, blood ketones were never measured, and the study was funded by a ketone ingredient manufacturer. Treat it as promising and underpowered rather than settled.
